From 1881 to 1899, the Army Corps of Engineers erected a significant breakwater, affording protection to ships at anchor, and by 1902, the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse marked the entrance to the harbor. By the early 1800s, the importance of Rockland Harbor became clear. Not only had Rockland Harbor became a harbor of refuge for coasting.

Rockland Breakwater Light - Rockland ME. Sep 2022. This is a unique experience but might not be suitable for everyone. The lighthouse is located at the end of a 7/8-mile long breakwater. The lighthouse was not open when we visited. There are a couple of outside benches to sit on up some stairs at the side of the lighthouse.

Rockland Harbor Breakwater Light is a historic lighthouse complex at the end of the Rockland Breakwater in the harbor of Rockland, Maine. Replacing a light station at Jameson Point (the northern end of the breakwater), the light was established in 1902, about two years after completion of the breakwater.

Cost estimate for the project was $500,000. As early as 1886, discussions among those responsible for the project considered changing the original two-breakwater design in favor of a single, long breakwater. The single breakwater plan was approved in 1890 and was completed on November 24, 1899.

Rockland Harbor Southwest Lighthouse was privately built by Dr. Bruce Woolett between 1981 and 1987. After being completed and equipped with a lens, the lighthouse was recognized by the Coast Guard as a private aid to navigation marking nearby Seal Ledge.

The breakwater extends 4,346 feet or eight tenths of a mile from Jameson Point into Rockland Harbor. How much granite was used to build the breakwater? Keepers. The period of lighthouse keepers at Rockland Breakwater began in 1888 with a part time keeper that tended the beacon and ended when the last Coast Guard personnel left the lighthouse in 1965. The first keepers were members of the civilian U. S. Lighthouse Service, founded in 1789 and one of the oldest Federal Government organizations.
